As the UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament resumed after the long holiday break, the DLSU Lady Spikers welcomed the new year on a high note as they dominated the UE Lady Warriors in straight sets, 25-6, 25-16, 25-11, earlier today at The Arena in San Juan City.
The duo of veterans Mika Reyes and Ara Galang led the Taft-based volleybelles with 10 points apiece. Service aces were also key to La Salle’s victory as they tallied a total of 16 service aces compared to only one from UE.
The Lady Spikers quickly dominated the Lady Warriors in the first set with a 7-1 run to take an early six point lead, 9-3. Reyes led the attacking department of La Salle while Desiree Cheng and Kim Dy delivered several service aces. The Taft-based squad continued to play consistently in the entire set, gaining a 16 point lead against UE, 22-6. La Salle continued their hot streak until team captain Galang finally sealed the set with a block, 25-6.
The second set was a different story though as the Lady Spikers started off with a couple of errors, causing UE to take the lead for the first time, 4-3. However, La Salle immediately made up for their unforced errors and made an 8-1 run. La Salle’s service once again became a thorn on UE’s side as they had a hard time receiving the first ball. The Lady Spikers remained steady in their offense and coverage to hold a comfortable lead, 22-15. UE’s Shaya Adorador gave La Salle the second set win, 25-16, as her attack went wide.

Similar to the first two sets, the Lady Spikers were fast enough to go ahead of UE in the third set. The Lady Warriors couldn’t find the right rhythm to stay close to La Salle as they trailed by as much as seven points. Galang made back-to-back service aces to push their lead to nine, 19-10. Another service ace from Galang put the Lady Spikers at match point. A quick attack by Mary Joy Baron concluded the match, 25-11.
The service department was led by Galang and Cheng as they both contributed five service aces each. Other starters were also successful in making big contributions in the win as Cheng and Cyd Demecillo had a total of eight points each while Kim Dy and setter Kim Fajardo chipped in six points apiece.
Up next for the Lady Spikers are the defending champions, the ADMU Lady Eagles. This will be their last match in the first round and it will be held on January 11, 4pm, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
