DLSU Football teams start second round with draws

Both the DLSU Men’s and Women’s Football teams saw action last January 25 to begin the second round of UAAP Season 77 at FEU-Diliman. The Men’s team spurred a draw against the FEU Tamaraws with a score of 1-1, courtesy of an equalizing goal at the 90th minute by Chuck Uy.

Meanwhile, in the first game of the day, the Women’s side faced the ADMU Lady Eagles with the game concluding at a scoreless stalemate.

Last-minute looper
It was third-year substitute Chuck Uy who came to the rescue for the Green Booters as he scored the game-tying goal against FEU just seconds before the 90 minute mark. The FEU Tamaraws commanded the possessions for the majority of the game with La Salle only being able to reach the Tamaraw’s box in a handful of attempts. On the other hand, DLSU goalkeeper Raphael De Guzman had a busy afternoon against the shooting spree of the Tamaraws. Synchronized passing by FEU’s midfield created opportunities for them to score, only to be spoiled by De Guzman.

FEU registered the first goal of the match via a penalty kick at the 85th minute. La Salle’s Gregory Yang committed the foul at the penalty box while trying to protect the ball and waiting for the goalkeeper to secure possession. Jesus Meliza drained the free-kick to give the Tamaraws a one-point advantage. It was literally a last minute-shot that saved the game for the Green-and-White when Yoshiharu Kiozumi’s long pass reached Uy who then lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper.

Scoreless standoff
In the first match of the afternoon, The Lady Booters went head-to-head with the Ateneo Lady Eagles on a match that was not short of highlight plays despite ending as a goal-less draw. The last time these two teams met was during the first round where the Lady Booters suffered a 2-0 defeat. This time around, DLSU played better defense, perfectly defending passes by Ateneo that they couldn’t hold off during the first time that they met earlier in the season.

It was a back-and-forth contest since the get-go with the Lady Booters getting into Ateneo’s side at will. Still, they were not able to convert mainly because of ADMU’s last line of defense. DLSU had some chances coming in to the second half but were somehow silenced for the majority of the game. Towards the end of the contest, both teams were struggling to keep possession and were often jousting for the ball.

The Green Booters remain undefeated and are still on the second spot behind the UP Fighting Maroons, trailing by just a single point in the UAAP77 table. The Lady Booters, on the distaff, got their first draw of the season.
