The Smart-Araneta Coliseum will once again be divided into a sea of blue and green as two fierce rivals, the Ateneo Lady Eagles and the DLSU Lady Spikers, will clash in a battle of title contenders this Saturday at 4:30 pm.
The Lady Spikers have a score to settle with the Lady Eagles, whom they haven’t beaten since the second game of the UAAP Season 76 Finals series two years ago. The Ateneo team, on the other hand, is looking to extend its dominance by winning its 25th straight game stretching back to the same time period.
Last Sunday, La Salle won their second straight match after taking down the UE Lady Warriors in three sets, 25-10, 25-13, 25-21. It wasn’t much of a contest in the first two sets as the Taft-based squad exerted their will early on to breeze past their opponents. The Lady Warriors attempted a comeback in the third set but were unable to pull it off in the endgame.
Mika Reyes held the fort for the Lady Spikers, chipping in a team-high 10 points. Kim Fajardo focused on getting her teammates involved, finishing the game with an impressive 14 sets.
The Lady Eagles also dominated the Recto-based squad last Wednesday, sweeping them in straight sets, 25-12, 25-10, 25-10. Jho Maraguinot led the way for Ateneo with 11 points. Alyssa Valdez also added 10 points, the last of which gave her team their 24th straight win.
In their four games last season, Valdez proved to the biggest thorn in DLSU’s side. She top-scored in almost their match-ups, with the Lady Spiker defense being unable to contain her offensive production. On La Salle’s side of things, Majoy Baron performed most consistently in the scoring column for the Green-and-White.
Will the Lady Spikers finally break their jinx? Or will the Lady Eagles continue to stamp their class? Despite both teams entering the game with different motivations this coming Saturday, records will take a backseat to what makes the league’s most storied rivalry both timeless and passionate: school pride.
