After an unexpected turn of events, Gelo Diamante is set to suit up for the DLSU Men’s Football Team in UAAP Season 79. Last season’s team captain initially opted to forego his fifth playing year for La Salle and proceed to medical school. Upon sending his application to graduate from the University, however, Diamante learned that he had to enroll in an extra class. Despite the situation, he took the news with a positive mindset and is enthusiastic about working with the team once again.
“As soon as I learned about that [staying for an additional trimester], I told coach, I told the OSD (Office of Sports Development). They said that I can still play one more year so why not?” Diamante shared.
Remaining upbeat
Diamante clarifies that exhausting his final year of UAAP eligibility and the continuation of his undergraduate studies will not hinder his plans of reaching the opening of the incoming medical school calendar. “Even if I play the season this year I can still make the med school [opening] because it still starts July or August. This will be like my final chapter of football,” he pointed out.
Younger brother Jed also appeared to be upbeat as he has another opportunity to play with his brother. “I got really excited [upon finding out] kasi parang na bitin ako dun sa one year lang na nakalaro ko siya sa college,” he commented.
He expounded further, saying, “It’s really exciting kasi when I play with him [on] the field. I’m just looking forward to playing with him, sharing the same passion we’ve been sharing ever since.”
Leaving a legacy
Although La Salle previously competed in the 2016 UniGames last October without G. Diamante, he explained that team chemistry will not be an issue. “The UniGames was months ago and we’ve been playing as a team since. I’ve been playing with these guys ever since I can remember so I don’t think it will be a problem.”
The Ateneo De Davao Alumnus suited up for DLSU in 14 out of 15 games last season and was the team’s second leading scorer with six goals. The Lasallians’ campaign ended in a heartbreaking manner versus the ADMU Blue Eagles as they settled for second runner-up. He recalled the occasion, saying, “Actually, after that devastating loss last year, I didn’t know what was happening so I was really lost. I felt [like] it was really my last year.”
With the graduation of La Salle leading scorer Greggy Yang and fellow veterans Jojo Borromeo and Gerald Layumas, the striker’s return will be an invaluable boost for the upcoming season. G. Diamante will not only get another opportunity to play alongside his brother, but embark on his final quest for a UAAP Football Championship.
“I just want the team to have the best season we can, and hopefully we can get the title this time. We’ll be more prepared than ever.”
