UAAP: LSDC-Street dethrones UP, claims third championship

After a five-year title drought, La Salle Dance Company-Street (LSDC-Street) finished with 89 points to become champions of the UAAP Season 79 Street Dance Competition earlier today at the Plaza Mayor in UST, Manila. LSDC-Street clinched its third UAAP title after previously winning in 2011 and 2012. The UP Street Dance Club (UPSDC) and UST Prime came in second with 88.75 points and third with 85.75 points, respectively.

All eight member schools were split into three performing batches along with intermission numbers from the De La Salle-Zobel Dance Crew and UST’s Senior High School dance crew, Galvanize. The first to take the stage were UE Armada,  AdU’s Cast, and UST Prime. UPSDC and the Company of Ateneo Dancers (CADS) followed in the second batch while the FEU Dance Company and the eventual champions, LSDC-Street, concluded the program.

The Lasallians portrayed a routine that started out as a party that ended with a battle. Other than showing their expertise in hip-hop, the team performed freestyle, something they uncommonly do. “It’s something fresh and we wanted to do it. As LSDC-Street we always like bringing something new [to] the table every year,” explained Robert Deluria, a member and a part of the executive board of LSDC-Street.

Despite being the last to showcase their piece, the Lasallians still awed the crowd with the element of surprise. As LSDC-Street featured seven graduating members and several underclassmen, youth and experience both proved to be a crucial factor in creating a winning performance.

“We really thought of the journey. Our journey getting to the stage was rough, sobrang dami naming pinaghirapan. Sobrang grateful namin na we went through all of that kasi it’s all worth it in the end,” Deluria concluded and expressed delight over their triumph.
