PCCL: Green Archers blown out by San Beda, 79-35

In a lopsided affair, the DLSU Green Archers fell on the short side of the stick as they fell to the SBU Red Lions, 79-35, earlier today in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League.

All the Red Lions needed to seal the win was a red hot first quarter. Both teams did not score until the eight minute mark, but that all changed when Clint Doliguez drew an and-one against La Salle forward Ralph Cu. Doliguez led the charge and eventually scored 10 of San Beda’s 18 first quarter points. The Red Lions simply dominated on both ends of the floor and eventually ended the first quarter in the lead, 18-7.

The Green Archers tried to claw their way back into the game but could not capitalize on the chances given to them. With 2:27 left in the second quarter, San Beda was up 38-10 but three straight baskets by guard Anthony Yang and a jump shot by Mark Alcala were able to cut the team’s deficit to 24 at end the second period.

As the second half began, the hole that the Taft-based squad was attempting to get out of only got deeper. It was a game marred by offensive struggles for the Green Archers as they only managed to score 11 points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth. The Red Lions never gave the Green Archers an inch and just never looked back from the moment they led in the first quarter. The game ended with a score of 79-35, with La Salle blown out by 44 points.

Key takeaways

La Salle’s guard-centric small ball lineup did not stand a chance against the defending NCAA Seniors Men’s Basketball Champions. The team, overall, had a sloppy performance on the offensive side of the floor as the Green Archers weren’t able to take care of the ball leading to San Beda’s 24 points off of 20 turnovers.

The lack of ball movement and shot creators from the DLSU eventually resulted into poor shot selection. Despite drawing contact and having multiple chances at the line, the team had chances to trim the lead but couldn’t capitalize on San Beda’s fouls with a woeful free throw shooting percentage of 22 percent, converting only five out of 22 attempts.

Overall, the squad hailing from Mendiola dominated in every statistical category. Both Doliguez and John Oftana had 12 points each, leading the way in a very balanced team effort from the Red Lions. Aside from the size mismatches and the lack of defensive effort from the Green Archers, the energy of SBU was the main difference maker of the match.
