The DLSU Men’s Football outlasted the UE Red Warriors in a back-and-forth affair, 3-2, earlier today. The two teams went on a goal barrage at the backend of the first half, before a winning goal by Renzo Perez early in the second half provided the difference La Salle needed.
With the win, La Salle improves to 3-1, earning them nine points in the standings.
Junior Jed Diamante opened the scoring with a goal at the 30’ minute mark of the game. UE, however, increased its pressure after the goal which caused multiple mistakes by the Lasallians. The Red Warriors would finally break through with a goal by Mar Diano in the 38th minute.
With the Green-and-White still disappointed at the goal, UE would catch the La Salle defense sleeping when Regil Galaura capped off a stellar counterattack with a goal that just got past DLSU keeper Paeng De Guzman. Following just two minutes of action, the Red Warriors had turned the tables on La Salle to take a 2-1 lead.
Not wanting to enter halftime trailing, a fired up Coach Hans Smit pressed his boys to push the pace before the midway whistle. DLSU was able to earn a corner kick in the first minute of added time and Chris Lawless made the most of it with a volley that equalized the match at two goals a side.
Riding the momentum, the team came out of the locker rooms ready to go. At the 49 minute mark, a streaking Perez came down from the left wing to score the winning goal for La Salle.
With the lead, DLSU spent the rest of the game controlling the pace and picking their spots. In the end, though, neither team was able to break through again as La Salle took home the victory, 3-2.
Mathew Custodio, who missed the last two matches with an ankle injury, made his return to action in the second half, replacing Lawless.
The football team returns to action on February 25, versus the UST Growling Tigers, at the FEU Field.
