PRESS RELEASE: The Adamson Chronicle to discuss online journalism and misinformation in Plumang Bughaw VIII

On the eighth installment of Plumang Bughaw, The Adamson Chronicle (TAC) steers clear of journalist-centered themes, and instead focuses on the audience consuming journalism on a daily basis.

TAC is the 80 year-old official and autonomous student publication of Adamson University, and Plumang Bughaw is their annual core event that seeks to dig deeper into the many issues facing society. Given the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the webinar will continue to be held via Zoom and livestreamed on TAC’s official Facebook page on April 30, 2022, from 1 to 4 P.M.

To kick off the webinar would be Joselito D. Delos Reyes, PhD, who will expound on the relationship between online journalism and the rampant misinformation circulating online. Dr. Delos Reyes is an author and educator who teaches subjects such as new media and contemporary and popular literature at the University of Santo Tomas, where he also serves as Academic Coordinator for its Creative Writing program.

His works such as “iSTATUS Nation” and “Titser Pangkalawan” have been awarded the National Book Awards for Essay in Filipino while “Finding Teo: Tula/Talambuhay” was given the National Book Awards for Nonfiction.

Kilusang Mayo Uno National Chairperson Elmer “Ka Bong” Labog would then follow through with a vital topic often ignored when it comes to misinformation: convincing average Filipinos to believe in legitimate sources without sounding condescending.

Having been a labor organizer since the former dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s Martial Law era, Chairperson Labog is very much in touch with the masses and can equip attendees with more knowledge as to how social media users can help promote truth online.

Up next would be Congresswoman Sarah Jane I. Elago, who will discuss the role that public servants need to play when they become beneficiaries of misinformation. Despite being the youngest female legislator in the Philippine Congress at 26 years old, Cong. Elago’s public service has been lauded extensively as she received the One Young World Politician of the Year award in 2020.

Veteran author and journalist Joel Pablo Salud will then be finishing off the event by talking about what’s to come for journalists at this point, where they no longer have the monopoly on information dissemination.

Salud is currently a fellow of the University of the Philippines’ 53rd National Writers Workshop for Mid-Career Authors and the Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar as well as a senior editor of Rappler’s Central Desk. He was also a long-time editor-in-chief of the Philippines Graphic Magazine, where he rendered his duties for 11 years.

TAC also collaborated with various campus publications such as De La Salle University’s The LaSallian, Mapúa University’s The New Builder, Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ The Catalyst, and University of the East’s UE Dawn. Sponsors such as Silvanas Las Pinas, Crochet by MU, and the Adamson University Store will also be giving out prizes for participation in the event’s activities.

The webinar is open to all and registrants will be accepted up to the day of the premiere through the following link: bit.ly/PB8Reg.
