After a four-year hiatus since the pandemic, the Student Media Office-led Gawad Midya 2023 honored outstanding Lasallian student-media practitioners from the University’s six media organizations for their journalistic and creative works from Academic Years 2019-2020 to 2022-2023 at The Verdure, Henry Sy Sr. Hall last November 25. This year’s theme was “SIDLAK: For the Media and the People.”
Andrea Alandy Dy, Archers Network (ARCH) president for AY 2020-2021 and Gawad Midya 2023 project head, opened the event pointing out the importance of the media in contemporary times. “In times of darkness and uncertainty, the media is an effective weapon in overcoming disinformation, misinformation, and discrimination,” she said.
Former Vice President Leni Robredo, who addressed the participants as keynote speaker through video message, discussed the pivotal role that the media and storytelling play in the “dream of collective progress” and building empathy for fellow Filipinos.
Robredo also touched upon disinformation and fake news in her speech and the role of media practitioners in propagating the truth. “As aspiring communicators and media practitioners, you stand to represent our fellow Filipinos at the forefront of the continuing fight for truth… and to bear the responsibility of guarding it.”
ARCH’s Kyla Diamante and Bea Muñoz delivered song performances during the intermissions.
A total of 132 awards for journalistic and creative works, as well as for outstanding media practitioners, were issued in Gawad Midya 2023, with The LaSallian, ARCH, and Malate Literary Folio securing the Student Media Group of the Year award for 2020 and 2022, 2021, and 2023, respectively.
