The Office of Student Affairs and the Lasallian Mission Office led the prestigious Gawad Lasalyano 2023 to honor the works and achievements of the Lasallian community across various disciplines over the last academic year at the Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium last Friday, March 1.
A light shining in darkness
The event began with a speech by DLSU President Br. Bernard Oca FSC, who lauded the efforts of Lasallians taking part in the fields of service and leadership, culture and the arts, writing and journalism, and sports.
Atty. Dino de Leon, lawyer of Tañada-Diokno School of Law Professor Leila de Lima, delivered the opposition figure’s keynote address on her behalf. De Lima, in her written speech, recalled her experiences during detainment, expressing that she sustained herself by expressing hope for her fellow Filipinos.
De Lima then emphasized the importance of service, not only within the borders of the University but also for the whole country. She stressed the need for collective bravery amidst challenging times, urging the audience to “continue fighting” and be the spark in times of darkness and uncertainty.
Competitors acknowledged
The program commended Lasallians for infusing their Green-and-White excellence in both local and global stages.
Numerous Lasallian athletes—including 32nd Southeast Asian Games gold medalists Xiandi Chua, Iñaki Emil Lorbes, Patrick King Perez, Benjamin Phillips, and Michael Phillips—were recognized for participating in national and international events and competitions. Too were the DLSU Men’s Basketball Team for bagging the championship in the 86th Araw ng Dabaw Invitational Basketball Tournament and Viridis Arcus for winning first place in both the Smart University Clash and Campus Legends PH competitions.
Hult Prize 2023 Global Finals Program of the Year Award finalist Mariah Camille Oliveros and 2023 Hult Prize Regional Summits finalists Maria Katrina Aquino, Carmella Rose Cortez, Graziele Fernandez, and Juliane Brittany Pino were spotlighted in the ceremony.
Culture and arts organizations were also applauded during the program. These included DLSU Chorale for obtaining the Gold Diploma award in both the mixed and folk categories in the Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival 2023, La Salle Dance Company-Street for winning the 1st runner-up spot in the World of Dance Philippines competition, and La Salle Dance Company-Contemporary for taking the Meritorious Performance Award during the National Commission for Culture and the Arts Recognition.
Excellence awarded
Aside from honoring past recognitions from external organizations, the University also handed six prestigious awards of its own: the Gawad Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC Award for exceptional projects contributing to culture and the arts, the Gawad Leandro V. Locsin Award for student leaders focused on fostering culture and the arts, the Gawad Col. Jesus Villamor Award for well-performing leaders in the Reserve Officer Training Corps program, the Gawad Fr. Gratian Murray AFSC Award for students committed to social engagement activities, the Gawad Br. Asisclus Michael FSC Award for outstanding organization presidents, and the Gawad Francisco V. Ortigas Jr. Award for outstanding undergraduate student leaders.
Around 150 Lasallians were also recipients of the Student and Adult Service Merit Awards, which were given to honor Lasallians for their contributions and accomplishments across different disciplines.
