Citizen journalism, public responsibility highlighted in Baylayn 2026

Ang Pahayagang Plaridel’s BayLayn 2026 invited student journalists to gain insights from media practitioners on how to hone their craft in shaping the information landscape.

High school campus journalists from across the country gathered at the Manila campus for the 22nd iteration of Ang Pahayagang Plaridel’s (APP) annual campus journalism event, “Para sa Bayan at Lasalyano (BayLayn) last March 28

This year’s theme, “Mula sa Masa, Para sa Masa: Pananagutan sa Bayan ng Citizen Journalism,”  focused on citizen journalism, stressing the public’s role in shaping narratives.

The event opened with remarks from Dr. Dolores Taylan, APP’s faculty adviser, who motivated student journalists to continue and pursue their craft despite challenges. She also emphasized that even if they do not find themselves becoming professional media practitioners, they should still practice their responsibility by using their skills in citizen journalism.

Following the opening program, participants were placed in workshops that explored the diverse fields of journalism. Their findings were then tested in individual competitions.

For the event’s main talk, Rappler multimedia reporter Jairo Bolledo discussed the agenda-setting theory, which explains how media influences the messages received by the public. He noted that the information people consume molds their perception of individuals and events, citing platforms such as TikTok and podcasts as examples.

Bolledo also tackled the gatekeeping model in journalism, where media practitioners filter out information before it reaches their readership. He emphasized that this process ensures that news does not incite unnecessary fear or panic and that all facts are carefully verified before publication.

He further explained that newsrooms set news cycles based on how people respond to them, noting that investigative journalism is often overlooked as the general public tends to favor viral content, sometimes bordering on sensationalism. However, he pointed out that in times of crisis, such as the issues related to flood control, people often return to traditional media for reliable information.

In another segment, DZMM Radyo Patrol reporter Zandro Ochona talked about the continued relevance of radio in the digital age. Despite the rise of online media, radio broadcasting has adapted by providing on-the-ground coverage and expanding beyond traditional studio settings.

He also highlighted that radio, aside from providing news and entertainment, serves as a form of public service as they deliver stories that call for immediate attention and assistance.

The event concluded with an awarding ceremony, recognizing winners of individual competitions and publication entries. Ang Niyog, the school publication of Quezon National High School, bagged the event’s top prize and emerged as first place for Pinakamahusay Na Publikasyong Pangmag-aaral (Best Student Publication).
