ABOUT THE COVER

The cover explores the evolution of an idea into the University Student Government we know today. It should aim to move forward but not forget; it should strive to stay grounded but never limit itself.

We encourage our readers—no matter their personal opinions—to reflect on the origins of the USG, as well as the advancing standards it must meet to keep up with the times.

EDITOR'S NOTE

A short eight months after the 2018 Special Elections, the time to choose a new slate of student officers has befallen upon the student body once again. A task that has become an obligatory routine in nature—which can sometimes make it seem futile—can leave many doubting its purpose and significance. It is important to note, however, that the General Elections (GE) is the students’ contribution to the annual rebuilding and reconstructing of a University Student Government (USG) that should not only function on paper but more importantly provide the best quality of University life.

Student governance has evolved throughout the decades. From an organization that provided services to students, to a student council that pushed forward activities and people’s interest, and finally to a student government that up to this day continouously aims to represent and uplift the student body. The USG was conceptualized to be a co-equal and co-determinant body that is autonomous from the University’s administration. Patterned after the Philippine government, it exists to uphold the rights and freedoms of its constituents. Knowing that the student vote plays an essential role in realizing this, The LaSallian lays down that envisioned institution’s mechanisms to help everyone decide how to move forward. Giving the students the power to reflect on history and determine the future of student governance, this GE Special begs the question: “Has the USG become everything it was put up to be or should the student body keep on dreaming?”
