Archers snap skid, rookies fill in Revilla’s void

After three disappointing games, the DLSU Green Archers snapped the team’s losing skid, giving them their hard fought, 56-52 victory over the undermanned Adamson Soaring Falcons through the heroics of Jeron Teng, Norbert Torres and Yutien Andrada last August 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The highly contested match tallied six deadlocks and 11 lead changes, but in the end, the Archers managed to escape and beat the Falcons for the first time in two seasons. The victory has improved the Green-and-White squad’s standing to an equal 3-3 record, sending the Falcons to a 1-4 record in the standings.

Teng and Andrada scored the last seven points of the ball game, capped off with Teng splitting his charities with 8.3 ticks left, to make the much-needed win. Another rookie in the person of Thomas Torres help the Archers end the game, filling in the court general spot that team captain LA Revilla left because of an injury in the first quarter.

The Taft-based squad also showcased their defense in the late game, as they held the Falcons scoreless in the last three minutes of the match, paralyzing the Falcons at 52. The squad also forced a costly turnover for Adamson in a crucial possession, with 13.5 seconds left as big man Rodney Brondial’s inbound pass landed in the active hands of Archer Jed Manguera to preserve the win.

“I’m happy that the focus of our team is defense. Holding down Adamson in the last two to three minutes was really a good achievement for us. So I think we should develop this more,” explained La Salle Head Coach Gee Abanilla.

Norbert Torres dominated the game with an impressive line of 12 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks, while Teng had a double-double performance once again with 15 markers and 10 caroms.

Only two Falcons shined in the game; Ryan Monteclaro notched in 12 points, 9 of which came from beyond the arc, while Rodney Brondial added 8 markers and 12 boards.

The Archers did not dominate the four quarters of the game. Though La Salle raced to an early 6-2 lead in the early game as Torres and Teng launched an aggressive attack, the Falcons responded with an unanswered 7-0 run of their own, gaining a 9-6 lead after Eric Camson sank both his freebies six minutes into the ball game.

Mac Tallo ended the opening canto in style as he nailed a transition buzzer-beating three pointer to put the Green-and-White squad up, 18-13; he finished the game with seven points from a 3-of-3 shooting along with two boards, a block, and an assist in his 14 minutes of play.

Entering the second canto, former Zobel standout Joshua Webb immediately cashed in four unanswered fast break points. Momentum, however, suddenly shifted to Adamson after Manguera and rookie Falcon Jericho Cruz got involved in a scuffle that dealt the two players with technical fouls. The first half ended in favor of the Falcons with a slim, 32-30, halftime lead; the Archers were placed in the hot seat for a woeful 33 percent shooting average from the foul line, connecting six out of 18 attempts.

“A lot of people have been harping on it, and somehow gets into the minds of the boys. I think it is a mental thing, something that they have to work on,” noted Coach Abanilla about the team’s free throw shooting.

La Salle is set to face reigning UAAP MVP Bobby Ray Parks and the National University Bulldogs this coming Saturday, 12 noon, at the Big Dome.

“It’s important winning against a team like NU in our next game. We have to be just in striking distance between the pact, we don’t want to be left behind and so having said that, I think that game over NU is really important for us,” Coach Abanilla concluded.
