Green Journal: Jason Perkins v.4

With the UAAP Season 76 finals just around the corner, The LaSallian catches up with Green Archer Jason Perkins who was just named a member of this year’s Mythical Five. In this edition of the journal, Perkins discusses his favorite things to eat, his relationship with the crowd and even gives a shoutout to his professors and classmates in DLSU.

We’ve been training really hard and we even had practice today at Araneta Coliseum. The preparations feel the same from the regular season and we’re basically just doing the same thing. I’m trying to treat this like a normal game but I’m sure I’ll get the nerves when game day gets closer, like on the day before.

Man, the crowd against FEU was crazy and during the Final Four games there was more pressure because we’re pretty close to the championship. It’s a lot more fun though especially because of the atmosphere and the crowd. It’s just crazy on the court. The crowd is a big motivation but it’s a big factor too that you can’t hear much. One of the biggest parts of basketball is communication and it gets hard sometimes, especially with UST coming up since they have a really loud crowd.

The people are cool and I never imagined that they would be this friendly to me. I still get kinda shocked sometimes and it’s surreal when someone recognizes me and comes up to me then asks for a picture. I really love it and it feels like it wasn’t too long ago that I was in the back of a family diner in a greasy kitchen making cheeseburgers and French fries. I really can’t believe that people ask for pictures and take the occasional selfies with me. It’s cool just meeting new people. Since I’ve arrived here in the Philippines everyone’s been so nice to me. I don’t really get any mean comments so that’s pretty cool.

I really wasn’t expecting to be a part of the Mythical Five and I didn’t even know what it was until this week. I’m so focused on the championship and that’s what I really want. It’s nice to get a chance to play in the finals plus with the history it will make the games more fun. I’m so focused on playing the game. I’ll probably be matched up with Aljon Mariano and he has been playing pretty well. It’s gonna be a lot of fun since I’m kinda big and he’s really quick. He’s gonna run around and make me tired so hopefully I can keep up with him and just play good defense.

Basketball hasn’t really been affecting my studies though. Last term I missed a couple of classes because of games but my classmates were nice and they helped me with the notes and stuff. Before the games I’ve kept up with the Belgian Waffle thing and someone suggested trying the Banana Hazelnut flavor so I’ve switched it up. I was trying to go for the Cookie Butter but they always run out. Around school I just eat everywhere. I usually have a routine though and I get the Belgian Waffle plus a Buko Lychee. I pretty much just eat in Agno most of the time.

I wanna make a shout out and say hey to my math class, my CRITHIN class and my INTGLOS class plus all of my professors. You guys are great. I wanna say thanks too to this person who just gave me Jollibee bucks. I just got Aloha Burgers with it. I think I had four! Did you know that if we’re Champ of the Game we get like 2000 pesos in Jollibee bucks. I weigh like 257 pounds now because of the Aloha Burgers. I just order and they bring it to the dorm. After the games we watch a little TV and I sit on the couch then they just walk in and hand me some Jollibee. I also want to say thanks to Wai Ying Dimsum and Drake if he reads this. His new album made it to my pregame playlist.

You know I really just can’t wait to play in the finals.
