After a second runner-up finish in Season 77, La Salle Dance Company (LSDC) – Street will look to win it all in this season’s UAAP Street Dance Competition, which they last won in 2012. The University of the Philippines, last year’s champions, will try to record a three-peat, while last year’s runner-up, Ateneo, is still looking for their first gold medal in the event.

“We’ve been very excited for it,” Lianna Martinez, LSDC-Street’s company manager, says on the event. “Because it’s something we always look forward to because it’s the first time we actually get to represent our school again.”

They are ready to make their return to the competition scene after a short hiatus that allowed them to focus more on their productions in the past few months. “We wanted to enhance our performance skills and just perform maturely. That’s the aspect of dance we wanted to work on,” Martinez says.

Although they only trained for a short time prior to the competition, she remains confident with her squad. She mentions that they are used to that kind of training already and have adapted to it.

Their hiatus, however, did not create a negative effect on them. If anything, it only made them excited to return to the competition stage, igniting their drive to win. “It’s always much more exciting because there’s always that drive to win and that’s how we bond also as a team. That’s how we grow as a team,” she says.

Aside from trying to bring the crown back to Taft, they are intent on bringing something new to the table, which they are known to have done in the previous competitions. “We’re bringing something new to the table and no matter our podium finish, or with or without a podium finish we just want to bring something new and to do something new to the dance community,” she says.

Armed with their talent and unpredictability, LSDC-Street will hope to create shock waves with their return to the big stage. Will LSDC-Street be able to overtake UP this year and take the crown, stopping their run for a three-peat? Catch LSDC-Street as they are set to light up the Mall of Asia Arena tomorrow at 4 pm as they and the rest of the teams competing will vie for the title of the UAAP’s best dance crew.
