UAAP: Green Spikers defeat UE, snap losing skid

The DLSU Green Spikers ended their two-game losing streak after defeating the UE Red Warriors in four sets, 25-14, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, earlier today at the FilOil Flying V Center.

La Salle scored the first point of the first set after UE committed an error after failing to successfully convert its service. The Green Spikers would continue to maintain their lead throughout the set as the Red Warriors made several attack errors and struggled to stop La Salle from converting points off of attacks.

The Recto-based squad would try to mount a comeback after the second technical timeout by going on a five-point run to close the gap to three points, but the Green-and-White would claim the first set after finishing with a eight to nothing run courtesy of spike kills from Arjay Onia and Raymark Woo.

In the next set, UE would show signs of life as the Red Warriors tested the Green Spikers’ blocking multiple times and succeeded in converting points from attacks. On the other hand however, the team from Taft maintained its composure and had the opportunity take the second set after going on another scoring run. The set would end with La Salle winning 25-20, after UE failed to execute an attack attempt which went out of bounds and gave the Green-and-White a two set advantage over the Red Warriors.

The Red Warriors would then shock the Green Spikers, starting the third set, 6-0. Woo would score La Salle’s first point but UE had already taken control of the game’s momentum, running away with the set.

The Taft-based squad had multiple opportunities to cut UE’s lead; however, the collective efforts of Clifford Inoferio, Alven Aljas, Noel Alba, and Geric Ortega made sure that UE took the third set, 25-19.

With momentum on its side, UE began the fourth set on a short 3-0 run. DLSU, though, remained in striking distance while waiting for the right chance to secure the win. After Adrian Imperial scored the 20th point for the Red Warriors, La Salle would go on to wrap the set up, 25-21, and claim the match behind Cris Dumago’s spike kill at the center of the court.

The Green Spikers will look to win their second consecutive game on Saturday, February 24, versus the AdU Soaring Falcons at the same venue.
