Rant and Rave: ‘Silence’ by Becca Fitzpatrick

Almost every novel gracing the Young Adult section of bookstores everywhere fall into the same generic love story trap. “Silence” by Becca Fitzpatrick, among the gushy little novels, offers a welcome change from all the predictable fluff.

Silence is the third installment in the Hush, Hush series; the storyline revolves around two lovers whose romance is forbidden by Heaven and Earth. Nora Grey, the daughter of the Nephilim (a race of half-human, half-Fallen Angel super beings) leader, swore vengeance against the Fallen Angels; and, Jev “Patch” Cipriano who is, you guessed it, a Fallen Angel.

Silence starts off with Nora appearing in a graveyard, and told that she had been kidnapped for three weeks, and now wakes up with no recollection of the past five months – the months wherein Patch changed her life. The book tells the story of her struggle for her memory, and her thirst for vengeance against her captor. There are many scenes filled with heart stopping action and adventure, as well as scenes that make readers want to throw the book against a wall out of heartache – in a good way.

The story in itself is captivating and well built. The personalities’ characters are developed rather well, showing much more depth in the otherwise shallow characters like Vee Sky and Marcie Millar. The dissemination of information in some parts, however, appear too telling, as it is done too abruptly making the moments lack the emotional impact that it should have brought to readers. The reappearance of some old favourite characters, like Dabria and Scott, and the well crafted plot line of the entire novel makes up for the things that it lacks.

Silence is a fantastic refresher course to those who need a new delicacy in the Young Adult literature genre – action, suspense, thrill, drama, and enough romance to keep any heart satisfied.
