UAAP: Green Spikers bludgeons Soaring Falcons in first round finale

The DLSU Green Spikers made quick work of the Adamson Soaring Falcons in a, 25-14, 25-19, 25-18, three-set sweep last January 12 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

 


Myco Antonio led the Taft-based squad with 13 points while Philip Cerveza and Kevin Dela Vega carried their defensive duties with a combined six blocks.

 

The win lands DLSU at fourth place in the standings with a 4-3 card after winning three straight victories from a 1-3 record last year. DLSU Head Coach Sam Acaylar commended, “We had a nice game, they have a good heart and all the things I’ve expected, lumabassila.

 

Ron Jay Galang led the Falcons with a game-high of 17 points.

 

Dominating finish


The Green Spikers worked the team’s groove in the third and final set as the team closed the game for good at 25-18. The team relied on the blocking tandem of Dela Vega and Antonio to deny Falcons easy points.

 

Acaylar added, “We have a good blocking, we had a good receiver and we had a good floor defense.”

 

La Salle continued to press on the gas pedal as the team cashed in a total of 45 spikes compared to Adamson’s 31 spikes.

 

Steady performance


The Green Spikers showed great poise early in the match, denying the Falcons easy pointswhile limiting La Salle’sown errors.

 

Led by Antonio and Cerveza, the Spikers led by as much as 15-8 and went on to win the opening set. The squad continued momentum in the second set as the team opened with consecutive blocks from Dela Vega, Antonio, and Carlo Rivera for a quick, 3-0, lead.

 

Adamson called a timeout after La Salle uncorked a long run, 19-14. The second set ended in favor of the Taft-based Spikers, 25-19.

 

“We have a good bonding and the teamwork is there,” said Coach Acaylar.

 

One last round


With the first round in the books, La Salle hoped to carry momentum heading into a tougher second round and continue the team’s 2013 undefeated streak.

 

“Lahat ng teams malalakas, and we are preparing for this,” Acaylar optimistically concluded.
