UAAP: Green Batters loses unfinished game against Ateneo

Luck was not on the side of the struggling Green Batters as the team came in short against the Ateneo Blue Batters, 7-9 last January 27 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. The game was cut in the middle of the ninth inning due to low visibility.

Both teams were asked to discontinue the game since the lights in the baseball stadium were not working. The committee decided to end the game for the safety of the players.

Coach Joseph Orillana elaborated, “Di namasyado makita yung bola kaya hininto na yung laban, kahit alam namin na kaya naming manalo. Decision ng committee yun, wala kaming magagawa. It just so happens that we lost.”

Despite the committee’s decision to end the game, which favored the Blue Batters, the Green-and-White team managed to keep up against the eventual winner.

In the second inning, Carlos Munoz took the first home for La Salle. The Green Batters’ scoring streak started when Catcher Edward Flores reached home plate in the fifth inning.

During the fourth inning of the game, the Green Batters changed the tempo of the game by executing a triple play. The Green Batters ended Ateneo’s inning, taking three players out in one play.

Rookie Franco Hashimoto controlled the game as an efficient batter, giving two of his teammates, Edward Flores and Miguel Olmos, an opportunity to reach home plate during the eighth inning of the game.

Although the Taft-based batters were behind by two points in the last inning, the odds might have turned to the Green Batters’ favor as the team was already starting to gain momentum.

Team Captain Jay Laurel explained, “The whole team was upset that the game stopped. Both teams still wanted to play. That win would have prevented sweep by Ateneo. Anyway, there’s nothing we can do about it anymore so our focus now is on the three remaining games and to place higher than UST to help out DLSU in the General Championship race.”

The Green Batters will face Adamson University on January 31 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
