Win or lose, Coach Gee Abanilla and the DLSU Green Archers have always displayed a positive attitude throughout their run in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre-Season Premiere Cup.
They may have bowed out of the tournament with a heartbreaking 66-63 loss to the SBC Red Lions in the quarterfinals, but as Abanilla puts it, “I think [there are] a lot of changes going on in the team and for me this is a good thing for us because this is the starting point of having a new lease on life. People don’t understand what’s happening to our team internally, but I think it’s something positive.”
After ending the first quarter with a 17-14 lead, the Red Lions went on a 6-0 run to push their lead to nine at 23-14 with eight minutes left in the first half. Almond Vosotros and Arnold van Opstal then spearheaded a 7-0 surge that brought the Green Archers to within two points with five minutes left before halftime, but San Beda closed the half with a 10-3 run that gave them a seven point lead entering halftime.
Rising from the deficit, the Green Archers tied the Red Lions at 37 with 7:11 left on the clock in the third canto. Jeron Teng propelled the team into their first lead with a put-back, and the Green Archers went on to end the third quarter with a 53-46 lead, after a buzzer beating bank shot from beyond the arc by LA Revilla, who suited up for the first time in the league.
The Green Archers held the lead in the fourth quarter, pushing it to as much as 10 points with four minutes left on the clock, but a shot by Arthur Dela Cruz of the Red Lions started a 13-0 run which eventually brought the team’s run in the tournament to a close. The Taft-based squad couldn’t buy a basket in the last two minutes, even missing easy shots from point-blank range. Baser Amer, who scored all of his eight points in the last quarter, sealed the win with crucial free throws awarded after Norbert Torres committed his last foul on him in the last few seconds of the game.
Almond Vosotros led the team with 16 points and four rebounds, with sophomore Jeron Teng chipping in 15 points and five rebounds of his own. The center duo of Norbert Torres and Arnold Van Opstal finished with identical statistical lines, scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds each .
The San Beda Red Lions will be facing off with the National University Bulldogs for a slot in the finals this Friday, June 7, at the Arena in San Juan.

Be honest Gee, you don’t know what you are doing. Your team is deteriorating not improving. You are teaching your boys how to loose. You have such a bunch of great players that other coaches can only dream of. You are the only coach who can make this team loose. If you really love your alma mater, you should do the right thing. Stop pretending.
How many wins did you have as CSB coach? What is your average loosing margin? You are excellent in teaching how to loose but a great with explaining why.
*lose, or do you mean loose as something “maluwag”
