DLSU football teams finish strong in the first round

Taft Avenue’s footballers have had success over the past few days as both the DLSU Men’s Football and Women’s Football teams finished the first round with wins. The women’s team won against the UP Lady Maroons with a score of 2-0 last Wednesday, while their male counterparts snatched the win from the UST Growling Tigers with a last minute goal to give them a 2-1 victory. With this win, the Green Booters grabbed their fourth victory of the season, while the Lady Booters grabbed their second.

Last January 21, the Lady Booters faced off against a formidable foe in the UP Lady Maroons in the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo. Early in the game, UP had good chances on goal but DLSU goalkeeper Inna Palacios seemed to always have an answer. The Lady Booters also had chances of their own as they pressed on with counterattacks that were easily telegraphed by UP’s defensive line. Throughout the first half, UP had control of the possession but in spite of this, the Lady Booters were able to get some good chances on goal.

The second half started as an evenly matched contest between the two squads. Both teams went back and forth trying to look for chances at the other’s goal. As the game reached the 60th minute mark, the Lady Booters were able to find an opening, which was initiated by a swift counterattack. It was Megan Diaz who claimed the goal for DLSU to put them up 1-0. UP began to push the pace in search of a chance of their own but to no avail.
Once again in the 72nd minute, the Lady Booters found another opening on goal and it was Chelo Hodges who was able to put the finish, thus putting DLSU up by two goals. UP continued to struggle from that point on, and at the same time, the defensive line of La Salle were able to hold their own. The match ended with the score of 2-0 giving DLSU their second victory of the season.

It took more than the 90-minute stretch for The Green Booters to win against The UST Growling Tigers in their last match of the first round last Thursday at the FEU-Diliman Football Field. A last-minute goal by first-year substitute striker Christian Zubiri just several ticks after the start of the added time catapulted the game in favor of the Taft-based Squad with a final score of 2-1. Gelo Diamante drilled the first goal of the match at the 17th minute when a pass that spanned half of the field found Diamante who headed the ball over the goalkeeper. The Tigers, however retaliated shortly after halftime to tie the game at one apiece at the 49th minute. La Salle’s winning goal came in the nick of time, courtesy of Zubiri’s header coming off a pass from teammate Nate Alquiros. Green Booter Jojo Borromeo was sidelined against UST from a suspension due to accumulated cards.
The Lady Booters sit in the third spot while The Green Booters grab second place in their respective divisions. Despite being the only undefeated team, the Green Booters are still below the UP Fighting Maroons by a single point with the top-seeded UP squad having more wins and a large goal difference. The Lady Booters on the other hand, still have their Final Four hopes alive after the upset against top-team UP Lady Maroons which elevated them to the third seed.

“We still have a long way and hopefully this will go all the way to the last four [Final Four]. I’d say we’re about 85 percent,” commented DLSU football team head coach Hans Peter Smit regarding the progress of both teams.
