PRESS RELEASE: La Salle Debate Society makes F2F debating comeback at world championships in Spain

As part of its vision to Make The Game Beautiful and Win With Honor, the La Salle Debate Society is participating in the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) this December 27, 2022, to January 3, 2023, in Madrid, Spain!

The La Salle Debate Society (LSDS) is the official debate varsity of De La Salle University. LSDS is also one of the leading debate societies in the Philippines and Asia with success in debate tournaments both nationally and internationally.

The World Universities Debating Championships, meanwhile, is the world’s most prestigious debating tournament and is considered as the Olympics of debating, gathering hundreds of tertiary institutions worldwide every year. From social justice to art, geopolitics to pop culture, debates at WUDC can be anything under the sun. These debates are judged by adjudicators, who compete in their own right, while the entire competition is overseen by a Chief Adjudication Panel, considered among the best competitive debaters and judges in the world.

LSDS has participated in WUDC for decades and has amassed accolades from the competition.  The society has had two teams reach the English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) category of the tournament’s Finals in 2016 and 2021, with the 2016 team being proclaimed ESL Champion. We also had a team reach the Open Octofinals, finishing in the top 32 teams in the world in 2018. LSDS’ most recent WUDC achievement is in 2022 when a team reached the ESL Quarterfinals. WUDC was also hosted by DLSU in 2012, bringing together over 400 global institutions to the hallowed halls of DLSU.

This year, LSDS is sending six debaters and two adjudicators to compete face-to-face in Madrid, Spain. DLSU A (Ichiro Arbole & Daniela Jacinto), DLSU B (Jill Aycardo & Ken Alunan) and DLSU C (Charlotte Reyes & Ethan Miguel Peñalba) serve as debating teams, while Tiffany Kuo and Mezen Lababidi serve as adjudicators. The teams and judges were selected through competitive tryouts within the organization and have been extensively training since they were selected in August 2022.

We wish the LSDS contingent success in their bid to make the game beautiful at Madrid WUDC 2023.
