In a step toward sustainability and national progress, De La Salle University (DLSU) and the University of the Philippines (UP) signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) last May 2 at the Board of Regents Room in Quezon Hall, UP Diliman.

The MOU marks the beginning of a series of initiatives that DLSU and UP have committed to pursue over the next five years. Such initiatives include research projects, social entrepreneurship, and service learning. These aim to foster a strong inter-university collaboration driven by mutual respect and motivation for nation-building.
Key leaders from both institutions attended the ceremonial signing, which sought to reaffirm their dedication to tackling pressing issues.
UP Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Leo Cubillan emphasized in his opening remarks the alignment between the two universities’ missions, wherein they are “united in [their] commitment to honor academic excellence and equally to social responsibility.”
Cubillan described the agreement as an endeavor for the country’s future, signifying “a commitment to sustaining the long-term benefits of a long-term mission.” He noted that this would not only pave the way for deeper societal engagement, but also display the power of collaborative research and public service.
Echoing this sentiment, UP President Atty. Angelo Jimenez expressed his enthusiasm for the alliance. “As the national university, we consider it a great honor to be working with [DLSU],” he said in his partnership message, adding that the agreement has the potential to influence education and policies in the country.
On behalf of DLSU, University President Br. Bernard Oca FSC reiterated the shared goals of both institutions, stating that “We (DLSU) value our collective efforts toward sustainable development,” specifically the University’s commitment to building an equitable society through education. He also noted that the partnership goes beyond fostering institutional ties; it transcends to amplifying efforts on a national level.
DLSU’s Vice President for Lasallian Mission Fritzie De Vera concluded the ceremony with a reflection: “We see that the work of education is a shared mission,” and that no single institution can fulfill this responsibility alone.
