UAAP: Lady Spikers Tiu and Fajardo end the team’s season at 3rd

The Wensh Tiu and Kim Fajardo combo of the DLSU Lady Spikers ended the team’s championship run after stumbling on the Adamson Lady Falcons Bhebs Pineda-Pau Soriano duo in two sets, 19-21, 11-21, last August 8 at University of the East Caloocan sand court.

The pair lost the team’s twice to beat advantage.

With this season-ending semifinals loss, the Lady Spikers landed at third in the UAAP Season 75 Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournament, an improvement from a fourth place finish last year.

DLSU Coach Noel Orcullo explained that the team was not in condition; he said, “Medyo talagang ano lang, natiyempohan ‘yung walang condition ‘yung mga bata kasi galing sa exam. Malabo yung focus, hindi nakapag-adjust sa ginagawa sa kanila.”

Lack of momentum

The Tiu-Fajardo combo failed to contain the Lady Falcons, and consequently loss its lead, allowing the Lady Falcons to catch up in both sets.

Adamson exhibited dominance in the second match, leading by as much seven points, capitalizing mostly on the errors and the miscommunication of La Salle. Pineda soon after sealed the win for good by sending a thunderous spike over the La Salle tandem to end the match with a 21-11 slate.

The opening set also followed the same course of events. The Lady Spikers also struggled to establish momentum and committed numerous costly errors, allowing the opposition to make easy points.

Coach Orcullo later pointed out that Adamson’s strategy involved consistently attacking Tiu. He added, “Kasi siya tinarget, si Wensh. Hindi nakapag-adjust, parang naunahan nung mga errors niya, iniisip ng iniisip kaya apektado yung game niya.”

Looking ahead

With another shorthanded finish this season, Orcullo hopes that the team would improve next year via the training that awaits the players.

“So far maganda naman yung naging performance, kaso, hindi kami talaga nakakapag-ensayo ng beach volleyball. Hopefully mabigyan kami ng pagkakataon na magtraining ng maayos sa beach volley,” he concluded.

On the other side, Green Spikers Kevin De La Vega and Red Christensen improved their fifth finish last season, closing their bid at fourth.
