The DLSU Green Tennisters could not close out the UE Red Warriors in their second round matchup earlier today, losing four of their matches while only winning one at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts. It was also the same result for the Lady Tennisters, as Marinel Rudas scored the team’s sole victory against the NU Lady Bulldogs.
LA Canizares secured DLSU’s lone victory in the Men’s Division after overcoming Jeleardo Amazona in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6. The DLSU duo of Cano and Parpan would be the only other La Salle team to take the Red Warriors to three sets, but unfortunately the UE duo of Saga and Estano secured the victory in the end, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. Rookie Betto Orendain nearly stole the first set from Rodolfo Barquin, who won the set at 7-6, but the latter eventually wore the rookie out after winning the next set and the match, 6-3. The duo of Asistio and Gorospe seemed to be at pace with the UE duo of Baran and Delos Santos but errors and mistimed volleys prevented them from getting the victory.
Rudas bucked a slow start after surrendering the first set to NU’s Jzash Canja, 7-6, before taking the next two sets, 6-1 and 6-3, to secure La Salle’s only sets against the Lady Bulldogs. Ana Atangan and Jed Aquino lost in straight sets to Christine and Clarice Patrimonio, respectively, while the duos of Khyshana Hitosis and Jenni Dizon, and Nikki Arandia and Anne Castillo could not pull off an upset against their NU counterparts.
Both teams will return to the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts this weekend, with the Green Tennisters taking on the Ateneo Blue Eagles this Saturday, February 20, at 2 pm and the UST Growling Tigers on Sunday, February 21, also at 2 pm. The Lady Tennisters will rest on Saturday but will face the UST Growling Tigresses on Sunday, 8 am.
